28.1% Of Twitter Users Are Based In The U.S.
Twitter like most social networks have their roots in the US. But many, including Twitter have seen the share of US users drop steadily as more and more countries flood to these sites.
According to a recent study conducted by Semiocast, of the 383 million Twitter profiles that were created before January 31st 2012, only 28.1% of those were directly created by US based users. This figure whilst amounting to the number one place effectively meant that Brazil came in second with 33.3 million accounts created. Japan was third with 29.9 million accounts created.
Surprisingly, the US didn’t achieve top ranking as the country with the most active number of users—that honor went to the Netherlands. The big question is I suppose, “What gives?” The answer to this has been posited by experts who for a long time have said that the bulk of the sharing on Twitter is done by a small group of people within the general Twitter user base. Social media celebs like Robert Scoble alone accounts for a big chunk of the sharing done on Twitter.
Advertisers though don’t seem to mind the dynamic because people who come to Twitter to consume, are exactly the same types of people they want to sell to.
