Twitter Now Adding 1 Million New Accounts Per Day

As recent as last week we wrote about Twitter’s acquisition of tweet aggregator Summify in anticipation of its 500 million active users. Little did we anticipate that Twitter would hit that milestone in the very near future and surpassing many industry predictions of a couple years ago.

Several audience measurement sites and platforms have looked at the Twitter growth curve and few disagree that Twitter will surpass the 500 million active user mark before the April. In fact, according to a report by the Wall, Twitter will hit this number by the end of February or to be precise on the mark, February 25, 2012.

This prediction is based on the knowledge that Twitter is currently adding around 11 new accounts per second. At that rate, it means Twitter is adding around 1 million new accounts per day, a figure which sis astounding when you consider that only May of 2011, Twitter was languishing around the 300 million active user mark.

If you are scratching your head and wondering “what gives?” please don’t. The simple explanation of Twitter’s growth spurt can be explained using one word—“Apple”. Since Twitter unveiled integration for Apple mobile iOS5, the number of new users have gone through the roof. It is almost as if people are having a new and different experience using Twitter on their iPads and iPhone.

Will this growth spurt experience a slowdown? Only time will tell. But for now, Dick Costolo’s prediction of planetary domination looks on track.
