IBM Makes About $118 Billion Per Year

The days of IBM’s dominance in the PC and software market may be out the public consciousness, but that hasn’t stopped the company from racking up big-figure revenues—even in a shrinking economy.

The company released its Q4 and fiscal year 2011 earnings figures with many analysts expressing surprise at the growth that IBM has managed in the year. The biggest surprise was the 4% growth in net income for the quarter to $5.5 billion. This was achieved on the back of strong fourth quarter revenues of $29.5 billion—a jump of 2% on the previous period’s revenue figure.

The biggest gains in revenue came from the software division which saw a whopping $7.6 billion, a steady increase of 9% over the previous period. The hardware and technology division saw a slight dip down to $5.8 billion. But this slight dip in performance was not able to put a damper on the overall performance of IBM.

President and CEO, Ginni Rometty spoke glowingly about the record year for the company, citing things like the better than expected earnings per share performance; profits and the availability of cash that solid net incomes have made possible. In all the performance was enough to ensure that total revenues across all divisions come in slightly less than $118 billion. Not bad at all for a company that doesn’t get mentioned much with the likes of Microsoft and Apple.
