90% Of Internet Traffic Will Soon Be Video
Internet traffic used to be mostly text and photos, but more and more each day video is becoming the ‘It’ thing. Today video is the most pervasive entity on the web and experts have long since predicted that in the next few years, most of the traffic will be video.
It was only November 2011 that Cisco’s VP for Marketing and Emerging Technologies, David Hsieh made the bold prediction that in a matter of years video will be 90% of all internet traffic. Back then Hsieh put it like this: “Today over half of all Internet traffic is video—51 percent. And based on the current trends, we predict that in the next three years over 90 percent of all Internet traffic will be video.”
Fast-forward to 2012 and other experts are pretty much saying the same thing. YouTube’s head of global partnerships, Robert Kyncl, for instance not only agrees with the 90% prediction, he feels that much of what takes place with video will be internet-based. In other words, the TV will give way gradually to the web as the place of choice for all video viewing. According to Kyncl, “75 percent of all channels will be born on the Internet.”
With YouTube investing $100 million in original content, it’s clear that the prediction is seen as sound.
