46% Of Americans Think Tablets Will Replace Laptops
Experts in the computing industry have been quietly mumbling about the potential for tablets to eventually kill off the Desktop PC and ultimately reduce the use of laptops. That mumble has now become a roar, confirmed by a recent polling of 1155 American adults.
The polling was part of a study to gauge the view on whether the tablet will eventually replace the laptop, and a whopping 46% of respondents said yes. Age bands had varying levels of certainty, with adults ages 30 to 64 expressing the greater level of certainty. Young adults 18 – 29 and people older than 64 were not so certain, but still felt that the potential for a complete overtake is there.
In the current landscape, more young adults 18 – 29 use laptops over desktops, and so it comes as no surprise that this demographic is the most resistant to the change. But the larger question I suppose is whether or not businesses that for the most part still use desktops will make that switch to tablets. The iPad may be sexy, but can it do the things as comfortably and efficiently as a keyboard? I don’t own an iPad so I am perhaps not qualified to answer that question. But looking at the design and abilities of tablets, I would keep my desktop and laptop for most of my computing needs.
What say you? Is the laptop facing a imminent and bloody death? Share your thoughts below.
