British Police Shuts Down Around 2,000 Fraudulent Websites

Sites include . Published on January 15th, 2012. Written by Daniel Renfro.

The internet is an amazing thing and an incredible invention that allows people to virtually find anything and everything that they could possibly want. It has many benefits from a business stand point in that it is keeping up with the times since so many people do business online now and it is an easy form of advertisement as well. The internet also has social benefits due to the many social networking sites that connect people all around the world and has changed communication on the world wide web. The list could go on and on about the benefits and pro’s of the internet, however with the good comes the bad.

The internet is also a place where a lot of bad things can happen, from fraud, inappropriate images and other various web sites and the list also could go on of the negatives.

Here are some things that the British government is having to deal with in regards to negatives of the internet:

“British police have “closed around 2,000 sites set up by criminals and purporting to sell luxury goods, and are monitoring hundreds of others that have popped up on the web with the [Olympic] games in mind,” The Guardian reported.

The report notes that “hundreds of websites that could be used to dupe visitors to next year’s London Olympics” have been identified.

“We think there is some evidence to suggest they are waiting to commit fraud,” Janet Williams, the deputy assistant commissioner at the Metropolitan police, told The Guardian. “These websites have been set up and are in a holding position, and we will monitor them to see if they are used for criminal purposes.”

Though this is unfortunate what the British have found going on on the internet regarding their government and country, however it is good that they are on to it and taking appropriate action.
