Cart.com Domain Name Sells For $49,999

Sites include , . Published on January 11th, 2012. Written by Anthony West.

The last few months of 2011 suggested that the trend of big-value domain sales would continue well into 2012, and that so far, has been the case.

The latest sale is Cart.com, which sold on Sedo recently for a solid but cheeky $49,999. The purchase was made by Original Web Ventures Inc, who from all accounts is looking to develop. A few commentators on the deal are unhappy that a solid four-letter dictionary domain like Cart.com went so cheaply. For these commentators, the development potential is just too great, and demands a higher selling price.

That may be the case, but as with most sales, the value is determined by precise market conditions at the time. A buyer like Salesforce.com for instance, would perhaps pay more than $49,999 for a domain like Cart.com. But a Salesforce may not have been in the market at the time, so for this sale, I would say timing was the contributing factor.

There’s also the consideration too that Original Web Ventures Inc is looking to flip, in which case, they would have to get the domain as cheaply as possible. In this regard then, it would be interesting to see if the domain does come to market again in the near future.

  1. Definitely undervalued so an excellent price for the buyer. Maybe the seller desperately needed the money.

Personally I wouldn’t have sold for that price. I’d have tried to hold out for at least a 6 figure sum.
