Amazon Sells 4 Million Kindles

“Poor economy, what poor economy?” This must be the question on the lips of online retailers who are seeing massive sales this holiday season. And none more so than Amazon, who has wrapped up a stunning November/December with the sale of over 4 million Kindles.

News of the amazing figure was released in a statement by Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos, who also took the opportunity to highlight some of the bestselling Kindle titles for 2011. Bezos was quick to point out that 2011 was the best year ever for the Kindle family. Leading the charge was the Kindle Fire tablet which had the majority of the sales. This was followed by the Kindle Touch, with the original Kindle eReader rounding out the rest of the sales.

In terms of geographic spread, the Kindle also dominated Amazon sales, and was the most popular product in Denmark, Italy, Spain and the UK.

Of course, the Kindle is nothing without content and this is where the sale of Kindle titles soared. There was a massive 15% increase in ‘gifting’ of Kindle books, with many titles enjoying heft sales over the Black Friday and Christmas Day sales periods. Bezos didn’t waste the opportunity to thank customers for the strong performance either. Said Bezos: “We are grateful to our customers worldwide for making this the best holiday ever for Kindle.”

All in all, a solid holiday season for online retail—let’s hope things continue into the next year.
