There Are 220 Million Domains Registered In The World
Domain registrations continue to grow even though, the so-called best names have all been taken—this according to VeriSign the company who currently operates the .Com and .Net registries.
According to VeriSign’s latest industry data, there are 220 million domains registered across all TLDs as at the end of Q3 2011. This figure marks an 8% increase on total domains registered at the same point last year, and suggests that the growth in new domain registrations is far from slowing down.
The domain extension with the most registrations continues to be the default .Com, followed closely by the .Net extension. Overall, these two combined, amount to just over 112 million domains of the total 220 million registered. A surprising 89 million of the total registered are ccTLDs—a category which outgrew overall domain registrations by 2%. The most popular ccTLD is the .De extension from Germany. This TLD is second in popularity only to the .Com, and helps to show why some .De domains go for big bucks on the domain aftermarket. Clocking in at third most popular is the .Net, followed closely by the .UK, the domain used by people over in Britain.
All in all, the growth of domain registrations proves that there is still live in ‘new enterprise’ and this is always a good sign.
