Pinterest Surpasses 421 Million Pageviews

Sites include . Published on November 27th, 2011. Written by Anthony West.

The growth of online pinboard Pinterest has been so staggering that many experts are still trying to figure out the secret to its success. At the heart of the bewilderment are the 421 million pageviews generated in the month of October. This growth is apparently a staggering 2000% growth since the company last reported traffic numbers in June.

One analysts has compared the growth of Pinterest with that of Etsy (even though the two are qualitatively different) in an effort to drive home the point of just how much Pinterest has grown since it started. Etsy reportedly only grew by a decent 47% to 348 million pageviews, and while this growth is still a good thing for Etsy, experts cite its long establishment as a benchmark for Pinterest’s success.

The comparison of the two sites is not entirely a bad one because both appeal to women interested in design, fashion, and quality products that are not mainstream. The link is even more tangible when you consider that the most popular items on Pinterest are directly available on Etsy.

Pinterest which acts as a social-catalogue allows users to pin clippings of products they or their friends have an interest in, and although the site doesn’t have a massive base of users, the platform and the act of pinning is apparently very addictive. The site is expected top grow even further as the social aspect of pinning gathers momentum, and many are tipping it to become a veritable collecting point for VC funding since Pinterest acts as catalogue of commercial intent for all its users.
