Over 2 Million Hotmail Accounts Are Connected To iDevices
Get this: Microsoft has millions of Hotmail users; Microsoft also has a brand new mobile phone called Windows Phone 7. You’d think that from those two facts, Microsoft would marry Hotmail users easily to Windows Phone 7—but truth they say, is sometimes stranger than fiction because most Hotmail users are logging in on their iPads and iPhones.
Yes, you read that right; over 2 million Hotmail accounts are accessed exclusively through Apple’s iDevices. But the quasi-defection is not entirely Microsoft’s fault. In recent months Apple has made it easier for Hotmail setup for its Mail App. Since then Microsoft has seen a 100,000 leap in logins from people using iOS5 devices. The growth has been so staggering that even a Microsoft spokesman highlighted it in a release. According to Chris Jones, since Apple made its changes, over 2 million account holders have hooked up their Hotmail account through some type of Apple iOS device—this number he went on to add is also increasing rapidly by the day.
Microsoft’s challenge is to make Windows Phone 7 enticing enough for more users of its services who have the flexibility of logging in using other devices. Presently 40% of Hotmail users log into their account using the iPhone4; another 24% use the iPhone 4S with another 12% coming from the iPhone 3GS. A quick look at that math shows that Windows Phone 7 has very to share with the other competing platforms like Android. Steve Balmer may have to do some channelling of Jobs if things are to turn round.
Can Microsoft turn things round are Apple’s products too cool for the competition? Share your thoughts below.
