There Are 1,000,000 .IN Domain Names Registered To Date

The Indian economy has been booming over the last few years but many have felt that the burgeoning tech sectors in India haven’t lived up to its potential. While that may be true on some levels, it clearly isn’t true on all. If theirs is any gauge for growth it’s surely to be found in the online presence of Indian companies, and in this regard the evidence is strong.

According to the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI), the Indian TLD, .IND, saw its 1 millionth registration this month (October 2011). This is excellent news for a domain extension that many felt wouldn’t go anywhere; even with the support of a booming Indian economy. But perhaps what’s even more amazing is the rate of growth enjoyed by the TLD.

NIXI is reporting that since November 2009, the TLD has seen over 550,000 new registrations and it’s these registrations that have delivered much of the momentum we are currently seeing. But this growth and momentum is not enough for some. According to most detractors of the Indian internet boom, the popularity of the internet is yet to reach the masses. According to one estimate, although India’s 100 million internet users are third highest in the world, that total number is less than 8% of the total population of India. Clearly economic and technological empowerment is yet to reach the rest of India. But I am hopeful, and see the growth in .IND registrations as a step in the right direction.

Do you think the Indian government is doing enough to spread internet use among the masses in India? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.
