Will Facebook Start Charging Its Users?

Sites include . Published on October 1st, 2011. Written by Daniel Renfro.

If you have a Facebook account you have probably been seeing a lot of statuses and posts, comments and concerns over the spreading rumor that Facebook is going to start charging users to have an account. You might have even seen a status being re-posted that looks like this: “THIS IS OFFICIAL… IT WAS EVEN ON THE NEWS… FACEBOOK WILL START CHARGING DUE TO THE NEW PROFILE CHANGES… IF YOU COPY THIS ON YOUR WALL YOUR ICON WILL TURN BLUE AND FACEBOOK WILL BE FREE FOR YOU. PLEASE PASS THIS MESSAGE ON, IF NOT YOUR ACCOUNT WILL BE DELETED IF YOU DO NOT PAY!!”

Or you may have seen one that even went into detail regarding the prices that Facebook was apparently going to be using…

“FACEBOOK JUST RELEASED THEIR PRICE GRID FOR MEMBERSHIP. $9.99 PER MONTH FOR GOLD MEMBER SERVICES, $6.99 PER MONTH FOR SILVER MEMBER SERVICES, $3.99 PER MONTH FOR BRONZE MEMBER SERVICES, FREE IF YOU COPY AND PASTE THIS MESSAGE BEFORE MIDNIGHT TONIGHT. WHEN YOU SIGN ON TOMORROW MORNING YOU WILL BE PROMPTED FOR PAYMENT INFO…IT IS OFFICIAL IT WAS EVEN ON THE NEWS. FACEBOOK WILL START CHARGING DUE TO THE NEW PROFILE CHANGES.”

This rumor is absolutely not true. Due to Facebook recently coming out with its new Timeline feature, people began to assume I guess that they would have to pay some type of fee to keep using their accounts. Who knows how it got started, but on the Facebook home page it states that Facebook is “Free and always will be”! Facebook is making enough money as it is, charging for accounts would be ridiculous and probably make it lose its some 800 million users pretty quickly. Rest easy all you Facebook addicts, there is not going to be any charges to use Facebook. Happy Free Facebooking!

  1. I totally agree that Facebook will never charge for the site. They would never need to anyway with all the advertising revenue they make.
